How to Take Care of Fishing Equipment

A well-maintained fishing equipment not only lasts long but also performs well and ensures that anglers have a successful fishing experience. Fishing reels, lines, rods, tackles and other gear are exposed to dirt, sunlight, water and harsh weather conditions. Gear that is well maintained is protected from damage caused due to above elements and remains in excellent working condition.

  • Clean fishing equipment after every use – Dirt, algae, sand and other debris builds up on reels and rods during active fishing. The same gear must be immediately rinsed, cleaned and wiped with soft cloth immediately after returning home. This step is crucial in saltwater fishing as salt can cause damage to metal parts and corrosion over time.

  • Fishing reels need special attention – Fishing reels have moving components and hence they need special care. They must be cleaned after every use and lubricated as per manufacturer’s instructions. Apply reel oil on the components and grease the same to reduce friction. This helps in smooth operation with the right amount of lubrication.

  • Inspect fishing rods regularly – Anglers must check their fishing rods regularly for any signs of damage. Check for cracks and rough spots as they can cut or weaken the fishing line. Rod blanks must be inspected for chips, stress marks and scratches. Early identification of minor issues and getting them repaired early can prevent serious damages.

  • Maintenance of fishing line – Fishing lines must be inspected for weak spots, knots and fraying before and after the trip. Old lines must be replaced and damaged sections be removed to reduce risk of lost fish because of unexpected breakage.

  • Clean and dry tackles before storage – Wet tackles can rust faster when stored in closed containers without cleaning and drying them. Hooks, sinkers, lures and swivels must be cleaned and dried. Use tackle boxes with compartments to store them separately and to prevent damage.
